Description

The monkey puzzle tree is a popular ornamental tree that is now endangered in its native habitat due to overuse. Its history dates back to the Jurassic period, when fossils of a similar tree were found; this conifer poses a climbing challenge for monkeys that also gives it its name. This giant evergreen pyramid-shaped tree can live for more than a millennium. The grayish-brown bark of the tree is smooth and sticky with resin, whereas the dark green triangular leaves are 3-4 cm long, thick, stiff, and arranged spirally around the reptilian-textured branches, and can last up to 15 years. Monkey puzzle trees can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees. This famous ornamental tree is the national tree of Chile; it has also been a symbol of spirituality among Araucano tribes across South America, who traditionally fed on its seeds by mashing and roasting them or used them to make a beverage called ‘muday’. Both the male and female cones grow on this tree, with cylindrical and spherical shapes, respectively. The female cones contain about 200 seeds in each and will spread when they fall in the autumn.
