A flower so delicate that it is named for being as light as paper. The Narcissus flower has always been a symbol of hope and renewal, and my top pick for bouquets and presents. A wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colours caters to all the preferences and tastes.

The confusion of whether narcissus and daffodils were the same or different has existed as long as the flower has. 

However, this curiosity not only led me to a rather simple answer to this question but also taught me how to grow my own daffodils.

Popularly known as daffodils or paper whites, narcissus is a perennial flower that belongs to the family of the Amaryllidaceae and is native to Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean regions. 

It is also recognised as the December birth flower, along with the holly flower. The Narcissus flower’s meaning is associated with the idea of renewal, growth, and self-love.

However, mostly the Narcissus flowers are believed to have a negative connotation due to the Greek mythology, which is believed to be the origin of the flower as well.

According to the Greek mythology Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephissus and nymph Liriope. His mother was told by the blind seer Tiresias that he would live a long life only if he did not recognise himself. 

However, due to his rejection of the nymph Echo, Narcissus ultimately fell in love with his own reflection, which led to his tragic death. According to Greek mythology, the first Narcissus Flower grew from the pool of water where he died—much like the Hyacinth Flower, which is also linked to a tragic myth of love and loss—giving the narcissus its name and symbolic meaning.

Cyclamineus daffodil		The Cyclamineus flowers are classified under division 6, representing only 1 flower per stem. Also, the petals in this are a little more swept back than the triandrus and feature a long, straight trumpet.
Jonquilla daffodil		The division 7 flower gets its name from the Spanish word junquillo, which means rush-like foliage. Jonquilla daffodil features medium-sized petals with a small cup.
Tazetta daffodil		The tazetta daffodil gets its name from the Italian word ‘tazza’, which means small cupped, perfect to define the small petals and cups of this daffodil. They are perfect to plant in USDA zones 5-9.
Split corona daffodil		The most unique variety of daffodil, the split corona, does not have a cup-like structure in the middle, rather a flattened one. This flattened cup splits into small fragments, which adds a double-layered look, making it stand out among all the daffodil types.

Can I Grow Narcissus Flowers at Home? 

Planting narcissus flowers in your garden is an effortless process that will lead to a vibrant and colourful landscape filled with blooms that feel as light as air—much like the cheerful Coreopsis Flower, which is also prized for its easy growth and bright, long-lasting display.

But before I break down my way of planting the narcissus flower, have a look at the ideal growing requirements for the Narcissus plant: 

Soil Type	Well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH between (6.0- 7.0)
Hardiness Zone	3-9 USDA
Sunlight Requirements	6 hours of direct sunlight and can also tolerate partial shade.
Water Requirements	Regular watering, but look for waterlogging
Mature Height	12-18 inches
Fertlilizer	NPK fertiliser with a ratio of 4-10-16
Bloom Season	Late winter to early spring

Now that the planting requirements are clear, let me break down the planting steps for the Narcissus flower: 

1. Take a daffodil and narcissus bulb and select a spot with well-draining soil that receives direct sunlight. 

2. Add organic matter for added nutrition and healthier growth. 

3. Dig a 4-6-inch deep hole and adjust it according to your bulb size. 

4. Place the bulb in the soil carefully in the hole. 

5. Ensure the bulbs are spaced 3-6 inches apart for a clean appearance.

Some types of narcissus, like Winter daffodils (Sternbergia lutea), are considered winter plants that bloom before spring. 

Hence, the connection of daffodils with December makes sense.

The Narcissus flowers are easy to care for and are perfect for beginners, as they do not require special care and attention. 

As someone who has been planting narcissus daffodil for a long time, here is how I make sure they bloom to their full potential. 

1. Water the plant thoroughly during the growing periods, but avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot. 

2. The Narcissus flower is susceptible to basal rot, which is either caused by poor drainage or excessive fertiliser; therefore, use a low-nitrogen fertiliser (4-10-6) for the plant.

3. Prune the plant when the flowers start turning yellow, as the damaged parts can make the plant wilt prematurely.

Flowers have more interesting and relevant information related to them other than their taxonomy, and I love going down the rabbit hole and collecting all of them like a shell collection. 

Let me take you through facts that I found about the Narcissus daffodils: 

1. Daffodil is the birth flower of March and also December, but here is the catch: only the paper white variety of the narcissus plant is associated with December. 

2. This perfect gift for loved ones is usually used to celebrate 10 years of anniversaries. Such a signature decor piece!

3. The narcissus flower is the national flower of Wales. 

4. The Narcissus daffodil has latex in it and should not be placed in a vase with any other flower, as it can reduce the life span of other blooms.

5. Daffodils are very significant in the Chinese tradition as they are associated with hope, wealth and prosperity. The Chinese people use these as decoration pieces surrounding the New Year to attract wealth. 

Research and Findings 

Daffodils have been a topic of research not only due to their benefits for Alzheimer’s and other conditions, but also for other botanical research that has helped in better planting and maintenance. 

The reliable research portals have validated claims that can help in better planting. 

Study year: 2019 Sample type: Farmers of Wales- online survey about soil knowledge and on-farm analysis.   Aim: To analyse whether farmers should apply fertiliser according to the flowering of daffodils.  Farmers across Wales were given daffodil narcissus bulbs to plant.  Key findings: Soil temperatures were analysed, and it was concluded that the local farmer’s knowledge of applying fertiliser after the daffodil flower for the first time was reliable.  2.
