1. Select the variety of seeds that can thrive in your local environment. 

2. Scarify the seeds to enable faster germination. 

   Scarification is the process of removing the hard outer layer of the seeds to accelerate the process of germination.

3. Place the seeds in warm water for germination and change the water regularly. 

   

4. After the seeds have sprouted, plant them in a heavy, clay-like, loamy soil. 

5. Lotus needs space to grow, so ensure that the container you are using can hold up to 12 inches of water, and it should be at least 30 cm wide. 

6. While planting them, ensure that you water them thoroughly and keep changing it regularly to avoid stagnation. 

7. Feed slow-release fertiliser every month during the growing season. Clean the debris to avoid any damage to the plant. 

8. After a few weeks, you will see aerial leaves emerging above water, which is a sign that the plant has started to mature. 

How to Care for a Homegrown Lotus Flower?

Caring for the lotus flower after growing it at home is the main step for having a healthy and colourful yield, and it just involves keeping a few things in mind. 

Let me break down the care tips of the lotus flower in the easiest way: 

1. The first crucial thing to understand is that growing a lotus flower does not have instant results, so you must have patience. 

2. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight are non-negotiable for the lotus flower. 

3. This bloom thrives in a loamy soil, and 12 inches of water above the soil is appropriate. 

4. Ensure you change the water regularly to avoid stagnation. 

5. Use a slow-release liquid aquatic plant fertiliser.

6. It is sensitive to extreme temperatures. Bring it indoors in case of extreme heat or frost. 

Interesting Insight Lotus is not a deer-resistant flower. However, there are certain similar-named plants like lotus vine or lotus moon pearlblush that are deer-resistant.  So, do not confuse the two.
